SEPTEMBER IN MINNESOTA...Building a Shed/Barn

From Ann Arbor, where I visited Tina, Jim and Ethan, I went to Rogers, Minnesota, just north of Minneapolis. Virginia joined me there and we started a project...build a shed/barn in Dave & Cheri's back yard. Tina joined us as well, but Jim couldn't make it. Jon & Jackie will be visiting Dave later in September, so they were missing as well.

Anyway, we had another great visit; a great project; and the first time Virginia and I have seen Ethan and Dylan together. A GOOOD time.

Grandparents enjoying the family...what a payoff!

Barn Building. Dave & I planned this project a month or so before the visit. He and Cheri wanted a 12 x 18 shed/barn for all the garage stuff so Dave could have some room to do some woodworking. So I did up some plans with a materials list and sent it to them for OK. Byu the time I arrived, all the material was ready, tools ready, all that was needed was a few days of work.

I thought it would take about 4 days, but, as usual, my estimate was off by 20%. It took 5 days. But it turned out just as we planned, even with a coat of primer...ready for final painting. Good Project.

First day...Evaluate the extent of the commitment and dig in. The building was to be built on concrete piers in case there was ever a need to move it. The foundation was 2x12 pressure treated spruce/larch/?

Stack of materials / Virginia & Dave set the concrete foundation piers / Dave builds the the foundation.

End of first day: foundation complete, sill plates in place, one wall framed.

End of the second day:
All the walls framed, floor completed, attic riser in place, first 3 rafters placed.

End of third day:
Slow progress, rafter notching, overhang outrigging, but by the end of the day, all rafters up, sheathing half done, more work than we expected.

Exterior is "board & bat", Cheri preps the bats with primer, Dylan supervises / End of fourth day. the roof is on! all those shingles, and hauling that stuff up the ladders...OBOY

Fifth day, DONE: burn the scrap and sit down!

Celebrate a good job: Dave opens a bottle of bubbly /
the workers.
